Limelight Exhibit: June 2005-    Mary Ellen Davidson

Through the years, Mary Ellen Davidson’s art has evolved around her personal and professional life.

3-19-04B.jpg (43888 bytes) From early childhood, drawing with her grandfather, she always had something to show. Sketching portraits of classmates became her niche in high school, and teachers selected her Artist of the Senior Class.

Her concentration in fine art, begun at the University of Southern Mississippi, later changed to a commercial art degree in New Orleans, Louisiana.

IMG_1819.JPG (31056 bytes) This lead to her work there with Alvin Sharpe, a well known engraver, eventually developing into her twenty-seven-year career in the medium of etching. (With Sharpe she helped create a memorial medallion for Wernher von Braun’s family.)

During those years in Louisiana, Mary Ellen had numerous showings at galleries within the New Orleans area, as well as in other Southern cities.

IMG_1821.JPG (28428 bytes) While living in Slidell, Louisiana, she was commissioned to paint the first New Orleans Food Fest Poster.

After moving to Huntsville with her husband Bob and their two children, Heather and Tim, she once again set up her studio with the 1/2 ton press, continuing to create etchings.

IMG_1823.JPG (32038 bytes) Her multi-plate etchings can be found in galleries and permanent collections throughout the United States.

With her reputation established through her etchings, Mary Ellen now devotes most of her time to painting in diverse techniques using watercolor and acrylics. Her artistic expression continues from themes that have developed throughout her creative life as an artist.
